Godzilla vs. Kong had a rocky development, first scheduled for May 29, 2020, then being moved up to March 13, 2020, only to be postponed again to November 20, 2020, and finally May 21, 2021. It was then pushed back to March 26, 2021, before finally arriving in American theaters on March 31, 2021. The film was also available to watch on HBO Max until April 30, 2021.
Adam Wingard directed the film, which was written by Michael Dougherty and Zach Shields. Borenstein, Dougherty, and Shields collaborated on the script. Godzilla and Kong square fight five years after Ghidorah's rampage in Godzilla vs. Kong, which takes place five years after King of the Monsters.
With the destiny of the planet at stake, "Godzilla vs. Kong" brings together two legendary enemies. A treacherous trip leads Kong and his guards to Jia, a little orphaned girl with whom Kong has built an unbreakable connection of love and loyalty. In the path of an infuriated Godzilla, they find themselves. It is simply the start of the enigma that lurks deep below the Earth's core.
Bernie Hayes, an employee of the Apex Cybernetics company and the host of a Titan conspiracy theory podcast called the Titan Truth Podcast, leaks information about sinister activities at a Pensacola Apex facility. As he finishes downloading the files, Godzilla appears and attacks. During Godzilla's rampage, Bernie finds a strange piece of technology that looks like a huge robotic eye in the ruins of the building.
Following the attack, the population, impressed with Godzilla's abilities to defend humanity, turned against him. Madison Russell, an adult listener to Bernie's podcast, is terrified about the newest Godzilla attack on her school. When she tries to reason with her widowed father Mark (who is also the Monarch's director) about the origins of Godzilla's rampage, he dismisses all she says, arguing only that animals, like people, may evolve. Soon after, Madison enlists the help of her best friend Josh Valentine to solve Apex's riddles and find the guy responsible for Godzilla's rampage.
Apex founder and CEO Walter Simmons enlists the help of former Monarch scientist turned Hollow Earth theorist Nathan Lind as they search for a powerful energy source for their company. When Nathan's brother tried to investigate the Hollow Earth, he was murdered by a tremendous anti-gravity field contained inside the tunnel. Apex has constructed Hollow Earth Aerial Vehicles, which are modified ships that can endure the pressure of the gravitational field, according to Walter.
The Titan comes and assaults the troops before capsizing the barge and almost drowning Kong and the others onboard. In the end, Nathan frees Kong by releasing his shackles, enabling him to combat Godzilla beneath long enough to swim up to the surface and overturn the barge, sparing the passengers from drowning. Then Godzilla jumps onboard a neighboring aircraft ship to battle Kong. Before Kong can drive Godzilla back into the water, fighter aircraft distract Godzilla sufficiently. To avoid the atomic bomb, Kong jumps off the copyright, but Godzilla wraps his tail around him and pulls him into the water, aiming to drown the Titan.
Given that they won't be able to return Kong to Skull Island owing to the cold, Nathan asks Ilene whether Kong would go down the tube if there were others like him. Ilene advises Jia to inquire about Kong's family's whereabouts.
Meanwhile, Madison and Josh track down Bernie, who recognizes Madison as Mark's daughter and joins their inquiry, believing Apex is to blame for Godzilla's erratic behavior. They slip inside the devastated Apex base together, only to discover that the "eye" Bernie had mentioned earlier had vanished. The crew is accidentally imprisoned and carried in an antigravity transport vehicle transporting Skullcrawler eggs down an underground tube to Hong Kong when they find a mysterious facility deep beneath.
The plan of Walter to use the Hollow Earth's energy to defeat Mechagodzilla is then revealed. After seeing that Mechagodzilla is the true culprit, Madison discovers that Apex is attempting to replace the Titans with humans in order to take over as Earth's dominant species. Mechagodzilla's biological supercomputer and cockpit was acquired by Apex from Alan Jonah five years ago after it was bitten off by Godzilla during his battle with Ghidorah and is now a skull that Madison and the others stumble upon while trying to find an exit. Ren is sitting inside the severed head of Ghidorah.
There, Godzilla makes his way into the heart of the city and sensing Kong's presence in the Hollow Earth, drills a shaft to the ecosystem with his atomic breath, causing the temple to collapse. Kong and Nathan's team fight off a flock of Hellhawks while Maia and her team try to flee in their HEAV, only for Kong to grab it on their way out and, despite Maia attempting to shoot him in order to escape, he instantly crushes the aircraft in his hand after peeking inside to make sure that Jia, Ilene and Nathan aren't in there, killing Maia and her personnel inside.
Kong accepts Godzilla's challenge and sets off with his axe towards Hong Kong, while Ilene, Nathan, and Jia follow in their HEAV, a hole created by Godzilla's atomic breath. When Kong fights Godzilla in Hong Kong again, he gains the upper hand and shoves his axe down Godzilla's throat, preventing him from unleashing his atomic breath. Kong attacks Godzilla with his axe, but Godzilla removes and discards the axe. Kong reclaims his axe and attacks Godzilla, generating an explosion that knocks both Titans back, giving Nathan the idea that Kong had won the second round of the fight with Godzilla.
Godzilla recovers and gets to his feet as he hunts for Kong on a nearby structure. Kong ambushes Godzilla from above and puts him in a chokehold, attempting to strangle him. This is done to divert Godzilla's attention away from the battle. Godzilla, on the other hand, manages to break free and unleash his entire rage on Kong, dislocating his left arm, slicing him with his claws, and even stomping on his chest twice, despite Kong's attempts to pull Godzilla off of him by pounding his damaged leg with his right hand. In response to his vanquished opponent Kong, Godzilla roars angrily at him, who is restrained and held down.
It seems that Godzilla is inspired with Kong's strength, and so spares his rival's life before walking away, leaving Kong wounded but still alive, and ultimately losing consciousness.
Madison seeks aid from Mark, as Josh and Bernie try to use remote control to stop the renegade robot. Godzilla and Mechagodzilla battle, with Godzilla getting the upper hand and burning him. While Mechagodzilla continues to batter Godzilla, the three approach an unconscious Kong, where Jia notes that his pulse is weakening as they approach him. Because the HEAVs are incapable of producing a large enough charge to restart Kong's heart, Nathan recalls Maia's earlier comment about the HEAVs producing enough energy to power Las Vegas for a week, and he flies the final HEAV onto Kong's chest and sets it to self-destruct, detonating the craft and unleashing a massive electrical charge that instantly revives Kong.
On April 17, 2021, it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong had eclipsed the overall box office receipts of the film Godzilla: King of the Monsters, despite the fact that box office receipts were still slightly reduced as a result of the epidemic.
This film marks the first time in 59 years that Godzilla and King Kong appeared in a film together since 1962's King Kong vs. Godzilla.
Aside from Peter Jackson's 2005 King Kong film, Kyle Chandler has starred in two more films starring King Kong.
An allusion to Martin Rigg's famed ability to do the same thing in the Lethal Weapon series may be made in the moment when Kong slams his dislocated right shoulder on the building to realign it.
Mechagodzilla's base is underground and capped by a pyramid, similar to the Central Dogma.
The location where Mechagodzilla is stationed, which is subterranean and topped by a pyramid, is reminiscent of the Central Dogma, which is also underground and topped by a pyramid.
